Playlist – 14th May 2009

As always, a programme of contrasts. We were soon into some deep jazz sounds from Julian Priester and Lonnie Liston Smith before playing Herbie Hancock’s take on Peter Gabriel’s Mercy Street. This comes from his under-rated album The New Standards and features some stunning playing from Michael Brecker, Mike Scofield, Dave Holland, Jack de Johnette and Don Alias. Expect to see a re-evaluation of this very fine release soon on the CJ blog. We then played two tracks featuring the standard Moonlight in Vermont – and, yes, we’re pretty certain now that Kira Neris’s DJ reinterpretation features samples from Mel Torme.

We took the show to the end with the big boys of jazz – the stunning first movement of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, two great tracks from Joe Henderson and Lee Morgan and one of Ornette Coleman’s finest ever performances – Faces and Places live at the Golden Circle club in Stockholm. We also played Levees – the standout track from Terence Blanchard’s tribute CD to the New Orleans survivors of Hurricane Katrina. If this doesn’t send a shiver down your spine, please see a qualified jazz doctor.
