Tonight we played tracks from a clutch of new CD releases and some anniversary classics. We started off with a great groove from Mulatu Astatque (who played live in London last night) and a track that will go straight onto to our Cosmic Jazz Club live playlist. Great jazz from Oliver Nelson, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Randy Weston and Donald Byrd before a Coltrane classic from the Giant Steps album (recorded in May 1959) and then another ‘trane track from Pharoah Sanders – a glorious version of Crescent . We followed this with more hip new jazz from Jabberloop (Japan) and Nicola Conte (Italy) before playing a brand new track from Carlos Lopez-Real, currently on tour in the UK, and a great vinyl classic from Mike Westbrook – the wonderful Love Song No.1. We ended with more anniversary music, this time from Marvin Gaye’s innovatory What’s Going On album released on 21 May 1971.
