Playlist – 18th June 2009

Eclectic as always we thought – but this week, surprisingly chilled too. New music on Cosmic Jazz from Tony Allen, the co-founder of afrobeat, and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble together with some reissues from Soul Note and Blue Note. After an inspiring performance locally at the Fleece, we also played music from the Robert Mitchell 3io together with 4 Hero’s Third Stream – a track that Robert Mitchell tells us will be released in a piano trio version by 3io later this summer. If it’s anything like the stunning live performance, it will be well worth waiting for. As soon as we get a copy you’ll hear it on Cosmic Jazz.

We also played a track that to us epitomises some of the qualities in the best of modern jazz – Siegfried by the French trumpeter Erik Truffaz. The trumpet playing unfolds out of the bell note by careful note but it’s still recognisably in the cool tradition of Miles Davis, while the discrete rap vocal, the propulsive acoustic bass and the subtle piano solo all move this music confidently into the 21st century. In fact, Siegfried came out in 1999 but it anticipated much that would follow in later years. The burgeoning Japanese and Scandinavian jazz scenes were undoubtedly influenced by this new take on cool and even the title (a nod to Thelonius Monk of course) seems to suggest a new wave in jazz.

Derek selected a track from Francisco Mora Catlett’s World Trade Music release, Neil gave us a slice of 70s jazz rock with Larry Young’s swirling B3 textures on Sunshine Fly Away from one of his last albums Lawrence of Newark, and Jacob introduced us to producer Pete Philly and his collaboration with Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman – last seen in Suffolk in Stan Tracey’s band – but here giving us something different with triphop beats and a gentle soprano sax melody. You can find the EP on the Amsterdam-based Unexpected Records.

As always, if you missed the show use the Listen Again facility via the blog or ICR and send us a comment about the music.
