Playlist – 25th June 2009

Truly international jazz and longer tracks tonight beginning with a slice of jazz electronica from Norwegian trumpeter Nils Peter Molvaer and recorded live in Tampere, Finland. Second up was a great Joe Henderson track from the 70s followed by the title cut from Nicola Conte’s most recent CD which I’m now really enjoying – thanks for persisting, Derek…

The lithe and sinuous playing of Goan guitarist Amancio d’Silva led into powerful modal drumming from the late and very great Francisco Mora Catlett on two tracks including one curated by club legend Carl Craig. Then into an old favourite from Argentinian saxophonist Alberto Favero before we settled back in the States with some great music from jazz heroes Charles Mingus, Hank Mobley and Grant Green. Stirring it up was Ornette Coleman (who had an impromptu chat with Neil in the bar of the Marriot Hotel, Westminster earlier in the week!) and Wallace Roney – both proving that you can weave jazz around the blues, rap and electronica and it can still sound great.

As always, try out the Listen Again feature and tell us what you think of the music. See you next week.
