Playlist – 11 August 2011

As promised, it was our CJ favourites all in a row tonight. We played all ten tracks (most in full) and talked about them and their importance in our jazz lives. We just had time to fit in a short tribute to Harald Johnsen, bass player with the Tord Gustavsen Trio who died earlier this month after a long ilness. He was just 41.

  1. Conjure – Prayer to Earth
  2. Emanative (feat. Matthew Halsall) – Find You
  3. Tord Gustavsen – Where Breathing Starts
  4. Robert Glasper – No Worries
  5. Tenorio Jr – Nebulosa
  6. Kenny Garrett – Beyond the Wall
  7. Gregory Porter – Water
  8. John McLaughlin – Peace One
  9. Erik Truffaz – Siegfried
  10. John Coltrane – Acknowledgement
  11. Carmen Lundy – You’re Not in Love
  12. Charles Lloyd – Booker’s Garden
  13. Black Renaissance – Black Renaissance

Video this week comes from John Coltrane with the classic Quartet here playing the intense Alabama. This was written in response to the 15th Street Baptist Church bombing, an attack by the Ku Klux Klan in Birmingham, Alabama which killed four young girls.

  1. Hi, great playlists and show. I particularly like your spport of British jazz. Are you familiar with the ‘Impressed’ UK jazz compilations, featuring Rendell-Carr, Westbrook, Tubby, Stan, Ronnie Ross etc? I helped put those together with Radio DJ Gilles Peterson. It was a great project. I am working on some follow ups.

    Best regards, Tony

  2. Tony, thank you for your kind comments. Yes, we are aware of the ‘Impressed’ compilations and have played several tracks from them. I will play something from tonight. Please keep us informed of your follow ups.

    Best wishes

  3. Hi Tony
Great to get your comment. Thanks – we do indeed champion British jazz when we can and we have featured tracks from both ‘Impressed’ collections. We also once included a videoclip from the interviews that GP undertook with MIke Westbrook and others as part of the ‘Impressed’ project. Very pleased to hear that another volume might be on its way.GP featured a jazz special on his R1 show this week.
We’ll play an ‘Impressed’ track tonight for you!

  4. Tony
Trying to get in contact with you re. stories of Impressed 3. I undestand this was planned, developed – and then shelved. Is this correct? What’s the story?
