Playlist – 31 May 2012

The programme this week marked a welcome return for Richard Beckton from the Ipswich Jazz Club. The brief I gave Richard was to present a session of hard bop music and his knowledge of the music is such that you should not espect the usual familiar tunes . The expectation was true, sure he played Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Lee Morgan but the selections, many from the Savoy label,  were not the ones you might expect. Richard is knowledgeable and enthusiastic; he has memories of buying Blue Note jazz on vinyl from a long-gone Ipswich shop and he has a wealth of music from the hard bop era. The selection of Gilad Atzmon as an example of a more modern take on hard bop was interesting, Cannonball Adderlerley was soulful and gospel-tinged but the selection of the night for me was Danald Byrd’s Winterset. As Richard said on-air, if you like that tune you will like jazz. Listen to it and enjoy the soaring, clear and crisp sound of Donald Byrd’s trumpet and enjoy jazz!

  1. Gilad Atzmon – Winnie the Pooh
  2. The Jazz Messengers – Ecaroh
  3. Cannonball Adderley – Still Talkin’ to Ya
  4. Curtis Fuller – Bluesette
  5. Donald Byrd – Winterset
  6. Lou Donaldson – Gravy Train
  7. The Horace Silver Quintet – Strollin’
  8. Lee Morgan – Terrible “T”
  9. Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers – A Little Busy
  10. Gilad Atzmon Trio – Ascendant
  11. Hank Jones – Hank’s Pranks
  12. Kenny Burrell – Your Host

  1. Hi Richard – thanks for the show.
Really enjoyed your selection of music (as always) and was introduced to some new music (as always). The Gilad Atzmon was interesting – even if you did play the same track twice! This is an album I’d never heard of and I rather liked his older more spiky, acid tone.
Come back with more from your vaults soon.
