At last, the show featuring versions of The Loud Minority and tunes by Zara McFarlane is ready for your listening pleasure. Click the Mixcloud tab beside this post to hear it.
This week’s show included two 2014 releases, one a re-release and one a new record. The re-release is saxophonist Frank Foster’s The Loud Minority (a suitable strap line for jazz fans?). It is a highly recommended, and what is more, very cheap in price. It is part of the BGP Funk and Jazz Classics series, released through Ace Records. Check the Ace website for more details. The Loud Minority includes Dee Dee Bridgewater hollering out a loud speech on freedom and rights for the loud minority and her final invocation at the end of the tune is followed by a rasping blow-out of free expression; amazing! Other artists on the disc include Cecil Bridgewater, Stanley Clarke, Elvin Jones and Airto Moreira. The other three tunes on the CD are great too; we will play more.
The show also features British vocalist and instrumentalist Zara McFarlane and her 2014 release, the strongly recommended If You Knew Her. CJ includes three tunes to represent the range on the record from Love with just Zara on vocals and Peter Edwards on piano through Woman In The Olive Groves, to my favourite tune on the record Angie La La which features Leron Thomas on vocals on trumpet. There are great bass lines right through the tune from Gavin Barras who plays with Matthew Halsall’s band and it also features harpist Rachel Gladwin who also plays in Halsall’s band.
To finish,I prepared the way for the visit to the show next week of Palmer Stallings by playing The Awakening and Doug Carn from the Black Jazz Label and a small taster of Elements of Life. You can expect Palmer to bring some wonderful, deep, vinyl jazz selections.
